repurpose

The repurposing project was a chance for students to improve and expand upon an already written work. Its purpose was to challenge students within the writing minor to transform a piece into something for a new audience.

I chose to take a piece of writing that I composed in the beginning of the 2014 school year. My original piece of writing was a post from my personal blog, Hurricane Kate. The Sophomore Experience: A Series of Unfortunate Hookups was a sassy, humorous piece about how to combat the questions that my family members always throw at me during the holiday season when I, without a doubt, show up to Thanksgiving and Christmas without some strapping young lad by my side. The blog was composed of 10 scenarios (failed of course) that had occured in my love life (ha) over the past year.

Taking the original 1,000 word post, I created a WordPress site called A Series of Unfortunate Hookups. This site is composed of eight stories, basically an extension of the brief one to twoline descriptions that were mentioned in the original post.

While I thought I was fairly proficient in navigating WordPress, I struggled to find manage and create a site that was easy to navigate for readers. Along with the technological struggles of this project, I had to write for a newer audience. While the original post was for the sole purpose of entertainment, I wanted to incorporate a broader, underlying theme that would reach out to not only collegeaged women, but also girls, teens, and even women older than I! In addition to these obstacles, I found difficultly in translating these stories from goofy wordofmouth tales to paper. I wanted to capture the same energy and emotion that each story encompassed.

By the end of this project, I was able to incorporate an overarching theme of selfrespect. I tied the stories together through a series of "Ah ha!" moments and a conclusion that really reminded women and girls that they are worth so much more than the guy that cried on their bedroom floor with a grilled cheese sandwich. According to my peers, they felt like they were in the situations themselves! Which was a relief to hear. Enjoy these stories of unfortunate hookups and self-respect here.
