why i write

The prompt "Why do you write?", based off of pieces by Orwell  and Didion, encourages writers to explore their motivations behind their writing. Didion explains how she sees "shining moments" and can't help but write about them to capture a memory, while Orwell explores the more...selfish, if you will, motives that lie within each author's piece.

Originally, I saw this prompt as an opportunity to investigate my more recently found love for writing and words and the way that I couldn't say things the way I could write them out. But found, quite quickly, that figuring out why I loved to write so much was a bigger task than I had originally planned. I travelled way, way back (like two years) and reflected on how I came to write, and how writing shaped the person and student that I am today.

Within this essay, I really struggled to harness my innervoice and capture how I really felt through my journey into becoming a writer. I wanted to be funny and honest, while still articulating ideas well. I wanted to provide readers with a relaxed, relatable voice, along with ideas of pushing one's boundaries enough to succeed.

In the end, I gathered my thoughts into what I believe to be one of my best pieces of writing ever. This prompt challenged me to honestly evaluate how I came to love the art of writing. See here for the Why I Write essay.
